Serena Pulcini
I graduated in Chemistry and Technology of Pharmacy at the University of Messina in Italy. This work included six months towards a Master’s thesis in a laboratory dealing with organic synthesis of antimalarial compounds. During this time I was offered a postion in public chemistry, and I decided to experience work as a pharmacist. This permitted me to definitely realize that my heart was in research and that I wanted to come back to the malarial field. I had the opportunity to join the Krishna group at St. George’s University of London in collaboration with Prof. Doerig lab at EPFL Lausanne, thanks to the Marie Curie Actions FP7 ITN InterMal fellowship.
Now I’ve just entered into the second year of my PhD. During my first year I have discovered the world of molecular biology and parasitology, studying the action of artemisinins on P. falciparum. My aim would be to assess the mechanism of action of this important class of compounds, in order to develop new and more potent antimalarials.
When I finish my work I like to have long walks around London, but I’m not a very sporty person. As a good Italian I prefer to eat and cook and always enjoy a dinner with some friends. Sometimes it is just good to stay at home in front of a book with a nice coffee to drink. And of course…..I love shopping!
